Hi,
I see this message in our environment if there is not a port
available for rsh to use (ie. number of processes trying to rsh into a
system exceeds limit specified in /etc/xinetd.conf).

Cool! So I ran that on all of my nodes and now have:

[akrherz at compute-0-0 lx26-amd64]$ ls -l rlogin rsh rshd -r-s--x--x 1
root root 25384 Oct 18 2005 rlogin -r-s--x--x 1 root root 16153 Oct
18 2005 rsh -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 210141 Oct 18 2005 rshd

Still same error:

poll: protocol failure in circuit setup
poll: protocol failure in circuit setup
poll: protocol failure in circuit setup
poll: protocol failure in circuit setup

Just to summarize, I believe the only changes I have made to this point
are to add all of my compute hosts to /etc/hosts and to run that
setfileperm.sh script on each compute host.

thanks,
