    [ The following text is in the "X-UNKNOWN" character set. ]
    [ Your display is set for the "ISO-8859-10" character set. ]

According to sge_conf(5), the xterm entry can be adjusted globally or per
execution host.

I don't see any reason that you can't use a wrapper script. You could either
strip out an argument that specifies the preferred xterm.

Or use a user-defined value:

# xterm-wrapper
xterm=`sed -ne 's/^xterm=//p' ~/.sge_xterm 2>/dev/null`

# fallback value
[ -x "$xterm" ] || xterm=/usr/bin/X11/xterm

exec $xterm $@
exit 0

Or you could supply a series of preferred applications:

# xterm-wrapper

for xterm in `sed -ne 's/^xterm=//p' ~/.sge_xterm 2>/dev/null` \
	/usr/bin/mrxvt \
	/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-terminal \
	/opt/kde3/bin/console \
	/usr/bin/X11/xterm \
	[ -x "$xterm" ] && break

exec $xterm $@
exit 0

BTW: none of the scripts here have been tested.
