Thanks Ron, that was it.  Somehow we ended up with a bin/ia64linux directory
that was confusing us.  It seems to be running well now.  For future
reference, to get it to compile we had to point it to /usr/X11R6/lib instead
of /usr/X11R6/lib64 and turn off "treat warnings as errors".
