I could swear that at least two of us looked through all the common shell scripts earlier but it did not occur to us to look for something as simple as a "cd" !!!

With that seemingly innocuous "cd" removed from the /etc/csh.login script, the problem is fixed.

good hint. My Suse boxes have in their /etc/csh.login (which I renamed so
that it is not used) the follwing lines:

#
# Go home
cd
#
# An x session
....
