A lot of scientific, technical and commercial computing is
done on high throughput compute farms.
Such applications don't use parallel programming libraries,
and the function of the batch system is to keep the individual 
nodes as busy as possible and keep up the job throughput for users.

Some examples which come to mind immediately are
Monte Carlo production and data analysis in high energy physics.
HEP codes don't parallelise well, but are 'event parallel',
so you set a job to process a whole run of events.

Render farms - individual animation frames parcelled out to nodes

Finance batch processing.
