Problem solved - the joys of differences between IRIX, RH9.0 and SUSE9.1!

The nsswitch.conf wasn't set to enable services via nis.

I solved the 2.4 / 2.6 issue by creating links from lx26-amd64 to lx24-amd64 in the utilbin, lib and bin directories.

Thanks everyone.

Daniel,

is NIS configured to be used for service resolution in /etc/nsswitch.conf?

Try

    % <sge_root>/utilbin/lx24-amd64/getservbyname sge_qmaster
