Argh.  You spotted the problem.  On our nodes we tweak the
stack size to 2MB for fortran and other issues.  However this
tweak has been getting in the way of codes that use threads.

I removed this:

ulimit -Hs 2048000
ulimit -s 2048000

>From our system and everything works now.
