I reported this bug to MPICH, bug #9892
(It was a slight misconfiguration of the setup_ch_p4 script.)

It is fixed in the 1.2.6 release.

The relevant line in setup_ch_p4 is:
$top_srcdir/mpid/ch_p4/configure" --with-comm=$COMM $otherargs ) #
--srcdir=$srcdir
