Brian,
also this is the printout of the pe:

qconf -sp mpich
pe_name mpich
queue_list compute-0-0 compute-0-0.q compute-0-1 compute-0-1.q
compute-0-10.q compute-0-11.q compute-0-2 compute-0-2.q compute-0-3
compute-0-3.q compute-0-4 compute-0-4.q compute-0-5 compute-0-5.q compute-0-6.q
compute-0-7.q compute-0-8.q compute-0-9.q
slots 999
user_lists deadlineusers defaultdepartment
xuser_lists NONE
start_proc_args /opt/gridengine/mpi/startmpi.sh -catch_rsh $pe_hostfile
stop_proc_args /opt/gridengine/mpi/stopmpi.sh
allocation_rule $round_robin
control_slaves TRUE
job_is_first_task TRUE

it works for all my software (i mena amber, mrbayes, namd). Only mm5 is big
trouble. I canstart a job with 2 machines maximum but then it somehow stays
hanging. i really do not understand. I also copied your exact settings but the
result is the same. mm5 however runns correectly when invoked directly through
mpirun.

martin
