[GE users] -now y option

I've got a strange little issue, when I submit a script with "#$ -now y", it
just sits there with:

qsub ./test-now.sh
your job 291248 ("test") has been submitted
waiting for immediate job to be scheduled ...

When I asked a user to try it out, it seems to submit in 2 seconds (works
fine).
Strangely, when I ctrl+c out of it and see a seg fault message, I do have an
output file for the job with the correct output.

Here is my script:
cat test-now.sh
#!/bin/bash
#$ -cwd
#$ -j y
#$ -N test
#$ -now y
date
pwd
exit 0

nothing is showing up in the 2 messages file about this behavior.
