[GE users] writing to a single log file

As I understand it the only reason you want to merge the files in real 
time is so that you can monitor the progress of the files.

How about keeping the output files separate and use a program such as 
http://logmon.sourceforge.net/ to watch all or a subset of them, I'm not 
sure if this will scale up to 100's of log files very well.

Alternatively, instead of merging entire files regularly via crontab you 
can always just pick the last few lines of each one and then display them.
