[GE users] error: could not get environment variable SGE_QMASTER_PORT or service "sge_qmaster"

The important thing is, at the command prompt that you are trying
install_execd, is the environment variable set??

that is:
% printenv SGE_QMASTER_PORT
...           <- should print it out correctly
% ./install_execd
