Well, that's possible, I just need to find out how to implement qping
with Nagios.

At the same time Nagios offers check_tcp plugin that can do
send/expect type of conversation:
gene1:/usr/local/nagios/etc # ../libexec/check_tcp -h
check_TCP (nagios-plugins 1.4.2) 1.66

Copyright (c) 1999-2004 Nagios Plugin Development Team
        <nagiosplug-devel at lists.sourceforge.net>

This plugin tests TCP connections with the specified host.

Usage: check_TCP -H host -p port [-w <warning time>] [-c <critical time>]
                  [-s <send string>] [-e <expect string>] [-q <quit string>]
                  [-m <maximum bytes>] [-d <delay>] [-t <timeout seconds>]
                  [-r <refuse state>] [-M <mismatch state>] [-v] [-4|-6] [-j]
                  [-D <days to cert expiry>] [-S <use SSL>]

 -s, --send=STRING
    String to send to the server
 -e, --expect=STRING
    String to expect in server response

Michael Green
