is there a more brilliant way to gather the number of pending jobs for a certain queue than "qstat -s p -q <name> | wc" ,-) We would like to show this info for a small admin tool. It works but it involves that qstat eventually generates thousand of line of output just for the sake of getting counted... Any better way to retreive this number via DRMAA, command line tools etc. is highly appreciated ,-))

qstat has a -xml argument to get results in XML format.  From that, you should be able to easily parse the data or use an XQUERY engine to do the appropriate aggregate stats.
