[GE users] can't start pthread with Gridengine

This is the answer.  By default SGE was setting h_stack equal to h_vmem which prevented thread creation in submitted jobs.  Setting h_stack to a lower value - say -l h_stack=256M - fixed the problem.  Thanks very much for the suggestions by everyone in this thread.
