You can's submit a new job which requests for parallel environments given by the regular expression.
Example:
# qsub -pe "mpi*[246]" 6 $SGE_ROOT/examples/jobs/sleeper.sh
You will get the following error coming from the qmaster:
"Unable to run job: Brackets ('[') not allowed in objectname."

However with qalter this is allowed.
# qalter -pe "mpi*[246] 6 <job_id>
This command will be successfully executed.

This behavior should be consistent for all clients.

Also with jsv functionality you would be able to accomplish this.

Here is an example of jsv commands which changes the pe_name and slots values:

jsv_on_verify()
{
   jsv_set_param pe_name 'new_pe_name'
   jsv_set_param pe_min "5"
   jsv_set_param pe_max "7"
}

This doesn't work now, but for the consistency qmaster should allow it.
