Check if the file /proc/self/io exists in your system -- only recent
Linux kernels have I/O accounting enabled by default.

% cat /proc/self/io
rchar: 4533
wchar: 0
syscr: 9
syscw: 0
read_bytes: 0
write_bytes: 0
cancelled_write_bytes: 0
0
