Have you tried just using a simple wrapper?

eg, in the gridengine config

    xterm   /our/path/xterm-wrapper

And inside of 'xterm-wrapper' something like this:

#!/bin/sh

xterm=/usr/bin/xterm

if [ -r $HOME/.sgeXterm ]
then
    read userXterm < $HOME/.sgeXterm
    ## or:
    # userXterm=`sed -ne '1s/^[ \t]*\([^ \t]*\).*
$/\1/p' .$HOME/.sgeXterm`

    [ -x "$userXterm" ] && xterm=$userXterm
done

exec $xterm $@

# end-of-file
