[GE users] "too many arguments" error in util/arch

[Mark will know, but you normally debug scripts by running them (in
the appropriate environment) like
  sh -xv /opt/sge/util/arch
which would quickly reveal the problem in this case.]

Potentially also if there's more than one occurrence of the grep string.
I'd write something like:

  libc_version=expr "$(/lib64/libc.so.6 --version | head -n 1)" : \
                 '.*version \([0-9.][0-9.]*\)'
