Not necessarily. We have a diskless cluster and we create an in-memory tmpfs mount where all of the SGE configuration is copied at boot. The spool directories are also created in the tmpfs during sge_execd startup. This will yield far better spooling performance for your cluster nodes than spooling over NFS (and probably local disk as well..)
