Hello,

willing to help as well, can't promise how much I can do though. Might 
be able to do some packaging (Red Hat Enterprise 32 and 64 bit, possibly 
Debian); I can probably do some testing.

Would not go for subversion for any new project. I'd second the vote for 
git.

I'd quite definitely second moving to 'standard' automake or cmake 
tools; that would be quite some improvement.

License wise, I'd say GPL. Especially if there's some considering of 
incorporating other GNU tools (like the batch scheduler).
