I found the problem!

In /etc/hosts, ubuntu by default puts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1  themachinename

But sge wants the 127.0.0.1 entry to be fully qualified. The problem
is on the _client_, and is fixed by making
the 127.0.1.1 entry look like

127.0.1.1 themachinename.fully.qualified.domain themachinename

So... now it works here. Thanks for the help. :)
